The Power of Social Media Marketing

by Allison

Why do you think the mos popualr site in social media world is called facebook ? The Social media is all about you, your face, your likes, your identity and your friends. Social media is wisely positioned in the intersection between you and the public.

Hiding behind false images or generic avatars is not looked upon kindly in the world of social media. And this is where its power lies: People are inherently interested in the lives of others, whether we know them in real life or not.

The rising of reality TV is a great proof for this. People want to take a peek into the private lives of their favourite TV and fashion stars. With social networking websites you can do the same with whoever you want. You can stalk on your classmates, workmates or neightbours whoever you want. Thats one plus point with social media comparing with TV. You can chose who you want to follow

Unlike other communications and entertainment mediums, Social MEdia is built on a non-linear concept. It is not one to many; rather, it is many to many. There is not one message or image being broadcast to large numbers of individuals; there is a panoply of images and data pOints that are shared and that travel virally. The act of spreading information through distributed channels is not new, of course. Remember the Breck commercial? She told two friends, and they told two friends ....

But these days, it's more likely that you'll tell 50 friends, and they'll tell 50 friends. Those numbers add up pretty quickly-to the tune of 2,500 individuals!

With Social MEdia sharing content and syndicating it across multiple channels has never been easier. Think of it: You can view a friend's or colleague's news feed on Facebook or a status update on Twitter, and then re-post their news to share it with your own user base. And now, given the ability to sort your Facebook homepage by clicking on the Top News link, the most popular content in your friend group rises to the top.

This is just one of many ways in which user-generated content and online sharing and networking can result in amplification. The ease and speed with which social media enables individuals to create and distribute content make it one of the most powerful mediums of our time.
