Firefighting jobs are highly desired and many people are trying to fill available positions. The nature of firemen jobs is intense and satisfying and there are great benefits offered. Because these jobs are so popular, it is not unusual to have more applicants than available positions. Even with this competition there are ways to improve your chances of gaining employment. The first thing is to meet the minimum requirements. You must be at least 18 years old and must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Once you have met these requirements the availability of firefighting jobs will depend on your location and previous experience.

Once the basics are met, anyone can then apply for firefighting jobs. Then, they will be required to successfully complete a series of exams to assess their physical attributes. Strength, coordination, stamina and agility are some of the attributes to be tested. A medical exam including a drug screen will also be administered and must be passes. Drug screens will continue to be administered throughout the career of a firefighter. All of these tests are important because those who perform best have a higher chance of being hired. Conversely, those who don't perform as well will be less likely to be hired. Courses provided by academies and universities are great way to prepare.

Upon being chosen to fill one of the open firefighting jobs, you will begin training. This will normally take place in your local fire department. There you will receive training essential to fighting fires such as fire prevention, hazardous materials control, local building codes, firefighting techniques, and emergency medical practices. These are all necessary skills for success in a firefighter career.

In addition you will receive instruction in how to use the equipment necessary for firemen jobs. Using ladders, extinguishers, chainsaws, fire axes, and other rescue equipment will be covered.

Knowing all the necessary techniques and procedures is vital. It is also tremendously important to make sure you are continually able to perform the physically demanding and dangerous tasks central to firefighting jobs. Because this is so important regular physical fitness tests will be administered to ensure continued fitness throughout your firefighter career.

So, if you are looking for a demanding, but exciting and rewarding career, head to your local fire department and see if there are firefighting jobs available and how you can get started.
