Bringing Back Your Business Again

by Christy Lyons

How and why did you decide to go into business? Most business owners start their businesses because they desire personal freedom. They want to be their own boss. They believe a certain business idea could be their ticket to fortune. They are not just infatuated with these ideas, they are in LOVE, a state of romantic bliss. When you started your business, you were probably full of passion and excitement. Yes, like that first dance you shared in the high school prom. Pretty soon your family and friends were begging you to please, stop talking about your business, but nonetheless, I'm proud of you.

It is time to fall in love again. It's been a while since you started your business and so much has changed. You busted your tail. You've had some rewards. Your love for your business may have seen some tough times, and right now it might be wavering. So ask yourself honestly, do some serious self-talk - are you still married to your business, or is it nothing more than a partner, a confidant yet a strange bedfellow?

Okay, so you might even be feeling some rancor when you think of your business - but in any case, here are some ways you can keep that eternal flame burning.

Take time off from the business. As the old adage goes, absence makes the heart grow fonder...right? Right? Do some soul-searching during your time off and ask yourself this - what drove you so passionately to start this business? Ask yourself what made you want to dream what might have been an impossible dream. Relive the dream. Hearken back to the salad days of your business, those happier times of yours.

Ask yourself what are the things that made you love your business. Some of the work you love, some of it is just plain old work. Remember the good rather than the not-so-good or mundane. Count your blessings. Adopt a systematic approach to work. If you don't enjoy some facets of your job, then outsource. Get third party assistance. Do only the things you love to do - everybody else can do the rest.

Make a plan. So you're flummoxed by the state of affairs at work, perhaps you need an air-tight strategy to get out of that rut? Put it in writing. Dust off your business plan. And as you read the first page, you'll probably get nostalgic as a younger, more mirthful you wrote all these great things about your business. Having a written plan eases stress and gets you back in charge. Isn't it nice to be in charge again?

Share your excitement. Once you've come back from the depths of business-related ennui, tell people you know about how you found the pot of gold underneath the rainbow. Just like you probably did in high school, when you told all your buddies about that amazing date you had the other night. Let people know about your great emancipation. Just like it is when you're in love with that special person in your life, being in love with your business is a great feeling to share, as it uplifts everybody else around you, not the least you yourself.
